How to Upload a Large File in Dropbox on a Droid

December 23rd, 2010 by steve

The fact that Dropbox works on my Droid 2 is amazing. With it, I can dump documents, pictures, and videos onto my server at home and then have them available whenever I need them.

Until now, the problem has been that after a preset time, the phone automatically locks and disconnects from the internet. The Dropbox aborts its upload and never completes.

The solution? The ScreenModeWidget by Sam Chiu.

There are three versions in the Android Marketplace.  Pick the one that suits your needs and select the “Screen Stay” mode.

Works great!  Thanks, Sam!

If you want dropbox, please don’t just go get it — let someone refer you so they get the free additional space Dropbox offers for referral. I’d be glad to refer you to Dropbox, if you like. 🙂  Post a comment or email me here:

How do I create a Virtual Desktop in Windows 7?

December 17th, 2010 by steve

Using Ubuntu has spoiled me. I love the multiple desktops it gives you and often use them for background tasks.

Windows 7 has no such provision, but Jason Stallings has written an application that does it quite nicely.

Here’s what it looks like when it’s running two virtual desktops.

Jason’s work is here.

The only thing I don’t like about it is that, despite the fact that I have an i7 processor, there is sometimes what seems like a significant delay in screen writing when switching from one virtual desktop to the other. If an application is busy, it won’t show up immediately. Still, it’s handy for running background tasks that you don’t want on your desktop, but need to give periodic attention.

Cobol is 50

December 16th, 2010 by alacy

On December 6, 1960, COBOL was first used on two different makes of computers, proving that compatibility across systems could be achieved.

I have a lot of memories about COBOL. My first post college job included having to program in COBOL, which was strange considering I didn’t have any knowledge of COBOL and they knew that when they hired me.
