Now’s the Time — Upgrade that RAM
August 17th, 2009 by steveI’ve been running a Dell laptop with 1GB of RAM since Vista first arrived. The extra money for the extra GB (this laptop maxes out at 2GB) was more than this Scotsman could take.
But RAM prices have dropped lots. I ran the scanner at www.crucial.com and picked up two 1GB chips online for a couple pennies under $24 — delivered. Man — if I knew how it would help performance, I may have done it when RAM was $75 for 2GB.
Outlook, QuickVerse, even FireFox load more quickly.
It’s time. Upgrade your RAM.

What strikes me as ironic is the fact that due to a SD memory card, my phone has twice the memory of my PC, in fact my new digital pen has twice the memory of my PC.

Yes…. PC memory prices are strange ducks compared to USB, SD, and others.

Well flash memory has the advantage that the contents remain even if the power is removed. It has the disadvantage that it is a lot slower than powered RAM.
Of course another thing that amazes me, is that the video card that is running the monitor I am in front of has a much better CPU and 4 times the memory of my first computer. In fact it has more CPU power and memory than the Mainframe at the first company I worked for.
But all video card does is process “information” and convert it to images for me to see.
